Your first startup office in San Francisco

Many teams look for a first office the month after a raise. Here is the checklist we walk founders through on tours. It applies wherever you end up, not only with us.

How much space does a small team need?

Plan desks for your current headcount plus the hires you expect in the next six months. A team of 4 that plans to hire 2 should look at 6-desk offices.

Should we sign a lease or a monthly agreement?

A traditional lease usually means a multi-year term, a deposit and buildout. A monthly license agreement in a furnished building lets you move in fast and change size as the team changes. Early teams usually value the flexibility.

Private office or coworking membership?

Coworking hot desks are cheaper per seat but open plan. A private office gives you a door you can lock, room for whiteboards and calls, and a place for candidates and investors to visit.

What should be included?

Ask whether the price covers furniture, internet, meeting rooms, phone rooms, cleaning and after-hours access, and whether meeting rooms cost extra by the hour.

Where should we be?

Pick a spot your team can reach easily. In SoMa, being near the Salesforce Transit Center, BART and Caltrain makes the commute easy from the East Bay, the Peninsula and the South Bay.

What should we ask on a tour?

How fast can we move in, what happens if we grow or shrink, what notice do we give to leave, who else is in the building, and can we see the actual office we would get.
