Private office vs coworking membership
San Francisco has every kind of workspace, from free brand lounges and cafe workspaces to hot desks, hacker houses and full floors. Here is how the main options compare for a startup team.
What is a hot desk?
Any open seat in a shared area. Good for one or two people who are out a lot. You cannot leave things out, and calls happen in phone booths.
What is a dedicated desk?
Your own desk in an open area. You can leave a monitor, but conversations are still public.
What is a private office?
A closed-door, lockable room for your team, with shared meeting rooms and kitchen. You can talk freely, keep equipment and hardware safe, and bring in candidates.
When is a private office worth it?
Usually once a team is 2 or more people who talk all day, handle confidential work, or are interviewing. The cost per desk is higher than a hot desk, but you are paying for a door and a fixed home.
